Between 21 and 25 May 2024, the Central European Dance Theatre and the Bethlen Square Theatre will once again organize one of the most outstanding cultural events of our country, the XI International Monodance Festival!
The programme of the biennial festival is always a selection of dance performances from recent years, providing an essence of the mono-dances created by the most outstanding artists and performers of the national and international dance scene.
What is mono?
The genre of monodance was inspired by and modelled on monodramas. Performances that are based on the personal testimonies of their creators are included in this category. However, monodance is not necessarily the same as solo dance, so the invited performances are not exclusively solo performances.
How Are You Alone?
If mono dancing, then solitude: we wondered what it's like to be alone? What do we look like, how do we look like, what are the external traits we carry when we are alone? Based on this, we wrote different character descriptions that we passed on to the AI. From these, he created so-called "MONOMANGES", based on characters from Far Eastern comic books.

I am a gamer. I'm connected to a lot of people who are really just names. I never meet them. I play with people, but I never see them. The whole world is my room. I live alone, yet I have friends all over the world. I don't care what I look like. Comfort is important and simplicity. A good playful armchair. Few objects. I like the dark. Lamplight. The noise that walls filter. I use headphones to hear only the game. The street is a terrain, sometimes I recognize my playmates in the store or on the subway. The real world is not for me. I sit and watch the screen. I am alone.
SOCIAL BUTTERFLY
I am always part of the company. Without me there is no party, no gathering. I'm the perfect company, I'm the reason the party is good, I'm the one who's everywhere. If I'm not there, nothing happens. My clothes, my hairstyle and my objects are attributes. They mark where I belong. At a football game in a jersey, at a penthouse party in a Vera Wang dress, on a morning run in a designer tracksuit, at the office in a business look. I'm never alone, that's why I'm lonely. But only inside, because I'm on my way to a party right now. Which I'm sharing with you because without a post and a check-in, there is no event. Everyone is my friend. I only have friends. They are the reason I am who I am. And they come to the party because of me.
